Good news people, Heems has announced his debut album 'EAT PRAY THUG' due out on March 10th 2015. It features Dev Hynes on guitar (aka Blood Orange/aka Lightspeed Champion) and was recorded between Bombay and Brooklyn, so should be provide an interesting mix of sounds.
He's also blessed us with the first single 'Sometimes', which he states is about 'dualities, identity and the space between spaces.' It's also charged with the same humour that has been an integral part of his sound since his days in Das Racist. It's a track that demands to be played loud, and wouldn't be amiss in any club.
This album follows up to Himanshu's two well received mixtapes from 2012, Nehru Jackets and Wild Water Kingdom. Anyone who follows Heems on Twitter will know he has a lot to say in regards to cultural identity and xenophobia, and given the recent spate of tragedies unfolding across the States, it'll be interesting to see what gets said on the album. For now though, he keeps it fairly simple acknowledging "Sometimes I'm into chicks/Sometimes it's politics."
He also goes on to say "Sometimes I write hard/sometimes I'm mad lazy/I just repeat works like clarity, fucking crazy" which raised an audible laugh from me on a crowded bus.
Let's just say that it's fun enough to put me in a good mood during my morning commute, and the sun hasn't even risen here yet.
