So last year Grimes (aka Claire Boucher) scrapped her fourth album that she'd been working on for some time. Until now, the only noise heard from that project was the single 'Go' which featured Blood Diamonds, and that Boucher had originally written for Rihanna. The track marked somewhat of a change in direction for the artist, and it's lukewarm reception from fans and the media alike was widely reported to be the motivating factor in going back to the drawing board and starting afresh for LP 4.
Well, not for the first time, the media was wrong. Grimes has come out to set the record straight regarding her decision, and said that the album was "depressing and I didn't want to tour it."
A second track called 'REALiTi' has also now been aired, and it's really quite good/not depressing, which has left fans crying out for the lost album to one day see the light of day. While I still doubt that will happen, what I took away from this whole situation were these words from Boucher:
"People’s opinions do not factor into my process."
Not bad for an unfinished track that was thrown away, and perhaps something for us all to think about when fighting persistent self doubt. Do these things for yourself as a creative exercise, and nobody else. If people happen to like your art along the way, then that's just further reward.
