Brandon Flowers is back for his second outing sans his fellow Killers band mates, and is in singles mode ahead of the release of The Desired Effect. This sophomore solo LP has spawned 'Can't Deny My Love', and it's further proof of Flowers' ability to write pop hits.
I feel I'm not alone when I say that I used to be a huge Killers fan, but seemed to fall away with each subsequent release. Flowers' first album Flamingo also failed to pique my interest but this new track made me sit up and take note. One look at the album's cover art will show that the singer is taking influence, or perhaps lending, from the past, and while the artwork suggests the 70's, the track sounds more 80's to me. The bold chorus/declaration that we are not going to deny his love will be ringing in your ears all day, whether you like it or not.
Second single 'Still Want You' somewhat disappoints me though. The intro and verses start alright, but to me the chorus sounds like a weird rehashing of 'The Tide Is High', and it's at this stage that it loses me.
The Desired Effect is out on 18th May 2015 via Island Records (US) & Vertigo (UK).
