Yeezy season has been approaching for a long time now, but there's no longer any question as to if it has started. Kanye West's long awaited seventh studio album has faced various issues such as delays, leaks, and even a change of name (from So Help Me God to SWISH) but now we've received two more singles from the record and even a release date, so West is no longer messing about.
Yesterday saw the release of 'No More Parties In LA', which features 2015's biggest rapper, Kendrick Lamar. At over 6 minutes long, the Madlib produced song is a long overdue pairing of the two rappers, who trade stories of LA and the fake celebrity lifestyle that it perpetrates. West's delivery also invokes his records of old, as noted by the lyric: "I know some fans who thought I wouldn't rap like this again/But the writer's block is over, emcees cancel your plans."
Previously we received 'Real Friends', which is my favourite track of the three in this article. Ty Dolla Sign makes an appearance too, but West's honesty is the real star here. He focuses on his relationship issues with both family and friends, admitting his own failings due to his hectic lifestyle, but also the shallowness & greediness shown by those close to him. Well wishes are often followed by pleas for money, and he even goes as far to say a cousin blackmailed him over a stolen laptop that contained sextapes on it. It's as real as he's got for a while, all played out over a moody sounding beat that I love.
'Facts' was released on New Years Eve, reaffirming that 2016 will once again be the year of Kanye West. Whilst the track hasn't been confirmed to make the final Swish tracklist, it instead feels like more of a throwaway social commentary, as the lyrics focuses on West's Adidas trainers, his hatred of Nike, his wife Kim Kardashian's Kimoji app, and also references Steve Harvey & Bill Cosby.
SWISH is finally due out on 11th February 2016.
